Official Rules

As with any great game of skill, the official rules of Lorg are simple and yet provide for complex play.

Rules of Royal and ancient game of Lorg

Equipment

  • The maximum number of clubs per player is two, including a putter.
  • Each player starts with three balls.
  • If a player loses all their balls, the only way for them to continue playing is to Lorg a ball.
    • If a player cannot play a hole due to lack of a ball, the other players will continue to play as normal, while the skipped player is allowed to Lorg until play ends on the given hole.
    • This process will be repeated until the player Lorgs a ball and reenters play on the next hole, or the match naturally concludes..

Round Scoring

  • One point is awarded for scoring the lowest total strokes on a hole however, if all players tie, there is no point awarded for the hole.
  • The winner of the round is determined by the highest point total earned.
  • In the event of a tied round, the player with the most balls accumulated at the end of the round (Lorgs minus lost balls) is the winner.

Hole Scoring

  • Every club swing that makes contact with the ball is counted as one stroke.
  • Every Lorg reduces the stroke count by one.
  • Losing a ball counts as an extra penalty stroke.
  • Dropping from a hazard, out of bounds, or a lost ball is an additional penalty stroke.

Lorgs

  • A Lorg is a found ball.
  • To receive credit for a Lorg, the player must shout “Lorg” immediately upon finding the ball.
  • Balls recovered from water hazards are not eligible to be Lorgs.
  • Range balls are not eligible to be Lorgs.
  • A ball must be a whole ball to be scored as a Lorg.

Game Play

  • After winning a hole, the player has honors for the next hole.
  • After everyone has teed off, the player whose ball lands furthest from the hole will have honors.
  • A player may Lorg at any time and location except under the following circumstances.
    • When a player has honors, they must immediately stop Lorging and take their swing.
    • A player with honors may also Lorg while walking to their ball but must be moving in the direction of their ball as they Lorg.
    • Once all players are on the green, they are not allowed to Lorg until they reach the next hole. Any player may continue to Lorg until all players are on the green except as noted above.
  • Any Lorg is scored against the current hole until the player has successfully hit their ball into the hole. A ball found after holing out will be counted towards the next hole.
  • If a player loses a ball on a hole but finds the same ball on a subsequent hole, the found ball will be counted as a Lorg.

Weather

  • As per ancient rights, there will be no Lorg if the temperature is under 50f degrees.
  • All other manners of weather except for lightning is acceptable to play in.
